چکیده

Introduction Mineral dust aerosol plays a critical role in atmospheric chemistry by providing reactive surfaces for trace atmospheric gases. 1-3 Mineral dust particles undergo heterogeneous reactions with nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere to yield adsorbed nitrate, nitrate coatings or deliquesced nitrate layers. 1,4,5 Reactions that can alter NOx (NOx = NO + NO2) concentrations are of great importance in the atmosphere because ozone is formed by a complex series of reactions involving NOx in a non-linear manner. 5-7 Additionally, particulate nitrate associated with mineral dust is transported to remote locations by prevailing winds and can undergo various further reactions causing regional impacts. 7

Chemical and photochemical reactions on mineral oxide surfaces in gaseous and liquid phases: environmental implications of fate, transport and climatic impacts of mineral dust aerosol

Mineral dust aerosols emitted from the Earth crust during various natural and anthropogenic processes continuously alter the chemical balance of the atmosphere via heterogeneous processes and thus, impact on the global climate. Understanding of heterogeneous chemistry and photochemistry on mineral dust has become vital to accurately predict the effect of mineral dust loading on the Earth’s atmo...

Chemical Reactions of Nitrogen Oxides on the Surface of Oxide, Carbonate, Soot, and Mineral Dust Particles: Implications for the Chemical Balance of the Troposphere

Particles present in the Earth’s atmosphere provide reactive surfaces for potentially important chemistry. The role of heterogeneous reactions of trace atmospheric gases on solid aerosol surfaces present in the troposphere is not well understood. Laboratory investigations can provide a basis for understanding the detailed molecularlevel physical chemistry of these atmospheric reactions. Kinetic...

Solubility data requirements and new experimental methods in atmospheric aerosol research

The uptake of trace gases by atmospheric aerosols and cloud droplets plays a critical role in the atmospheric chemistry of both the troposphere and stratosphere. The transfer of gaseous species through the interfacial boundary layer and into the liquid phase involves a number of closely entwined processes, including: gas phase diffusion, mass accommodation, evaporation, Henry's law solubility, ...

Aerosol liquid water driven by anthropogenic nitrate: implications for lifetimes of water-soluble organic gases and potential for secondary organic aerosol formation.

Aerosol liquid water (ALW) influences aerosol radiative properties and the partitioning of gas-phase water-soluble organic compounds (WSOCg) to the condensed phase. A recent modeling study drew attention to the anthropogenic nature of ALW in the southeastern United States, where predicted ALW is driven by regional sulfate. Herein, we demonstrate that ALW in the Po Valley, Italy, is also anthrop...
